Vazhakka Thoran - Vazhakkai Poriyal - Kerala Plantain Curry Recipe

Ethakka Thoran / Vazhakka Thoran / Kerala Style Raw Banana Curry Recipe:
Preparation & Cooking Time : 20 mins
Serves: 4 persons


Plantains: 2
Fresh Coconut: 1/2 cup
Green Chillies: 3 - 4
Shallots: 6
Cumin Seeds: 1/2 tsp
Mustard Seeds: 1/2 tsp
Turmeric Powder: 1/4 ts
Curry Leaves: 1 sprig
Red Chilli: 1
Salt to taste
Oil / Coconut Oil: 1 tbsp


1. Wash, peel and chop the plantain into pieces. 

2. In a saucepan, add the chopped plantains, turmeric powder, salt and water and cook until plantain pieces are tender. Drain and set aside.

3. Grind the shallots, cumin seeds, coconut and green chillies into a little coarse paste and set aside. 

4. Heat oil in a pan and add the mustard seeds and let them splutter. Add the curry leaves and red chilli and fry for a couple of minutes. 

5. Now add the ground coconut mixture and fry for a couple of seconds. 

6. Add the cooked plantains and mix well. Adjust the salt and switch off the flame. Serve with rice.
